Study Room Etiquette

posted by Christy

Finals are approaching fast, soon the library and study rooms will be filled with anxious law students trying to cram in that last bit of information before the fateful test.  I absolutely dread studying at the law school, not because I'm worried about deceitful students or nervous 1Ls, I just can't stand the coughing, nail bitting, and general annoying habits of my peers.  I know I'm not exempt from this list, but here are some tips that I try to keep in mind and that will hopefully help your fellow law students tolerate you during finals.

Avoid eating crunchy, messy, or smelly items while studying.  This is probably my biggest pet peeve.  I was in a quiet reading room last week with about twenty other people and some guy opened a bag of chips and started chomping on them like he was on his couch during Monday night football.  I mean seriously, just step outside for 10 minutes, finish your meal, and then attempt to study without distractions like the rest of us.

Turn down the iPod.  Music can be relaxing while you study, but hearing the constant hum of someone's music playing is extremely annoying.  Even worse is the person who softly sings along.  Are the eye rolls and stares not a hint?

Phones should be on silent.  We've all had our phone ring during class, in a meeting, or in the library, but try to make a concerted effort to turn your phone off or switch it to silent before walking into a study room.  Don't worry if you forget, most people aren't that annoyed by a ring if you quickly silence it.  However, those of you who actually answer the call make sure you are quickly stepping out of the room.  Someone who takes a call in a study room is really annoying.

Pop a cough drop if you are sick.  This goes for in the study room or during the final itself.  If you aren't wearing ear plugs, someone coughing every two minutes can really distract you from your work.  So if you are the culprit, try to bring water, candy, or something to curb your coughing.
