Review: The Whole Truth

posted by Allie

OK....Review take two.  Last week, due to technical difficulties, many of you may have missed LSJ's review of The Whole Truth. In case you missed it:

The Whole Truth is ABC’s latest legal drama.  The show focuses on a case as it unfolds from the perspective of the prosecutor and the perspective of the defense counsel.  The prosecutor and defense counsel are old friends from law school, both very bright attorneys and passionate about their jobs.  The show plays out and describes how each side uses the witnesses, evidence, and different counts for their advantage.

It’s a very interesting take on a case.  You see how each side strategizes and how each side chooses to present their case in court. I realize the process is very different in real life, but this drama attempts to describe a case from beginning to end.  From the arrest to the brainstorming that goes on in cases.  You see each side craft their case in chief from the beginning.  The first episode even showed the judge ruling on the motions in limine before the trial began.  The viewer gets to see the fight over every little piece of evidence- from text messages to video tapes.  Most court shows seem to collapse this process so I appreciated seeing the process play out.

While The Whole Truth is very entertaining, there are obviously some unrealistic points.  First, the prosecutor seems to almost play the role of investigator in some respects even showing up at the crime scene and spending her time at a shooting range.  The second unbelievable point is the amount of conversation between the prosecutor and defense counsel.  During the show, these two old friends are constantly badgering each other and egging each other one.  These attorneys arguably cross the line and even reveal strategy of their case to one another.  It's hard to believe that the first call you'd make when new evidence is discovered would be to your opposing counsel.

Overall, the show was extremely entertaining to watch as a law student.  The discussion of evidence, the strategizing of each side, and the interplay between client and attorney all provided a lot of entertainment.

Final review.....looks like my DVR is getting a new edition.
