Pushing the Envelope….

posted by Allie

Happy Friday to everybody!!

I have finished up my second week of my summer job and things are going well.  The learning curve seems to be a little steep, but I think I'm getting the hang of it.

One of the best experiences I've had yet is getting to hear stories about the firm's founding attorney through members of the firm. This attorney is a legend inside and outside the firm.  He is also a very active partner in the firm to this day.  He is one of those people that you read his bio and just feel inadequate- but then you meet him and he's so friendly.  On top of all of that, he is also a real pioneer.  A newer associate at the firm told me about one of her first encounters with him in her first few days.  She presented him with some research she had done and concluded that the opinion of the Court of Appeals was not good for our position and that we were in trouble.  He responded by saying, "what do they know?"  Ha.  I know a lot of attorneys throw that sort of lingo around- but my new boss really means it.  He has challenged authority and bumped up against some "big dogs" and actually won.

It really got me thinking.  I feel like the majority of law school is all about legal precedent and standards.  It's not very often that you hear, "Hey, that law isn't working, it needs to be changed."  Or "I know that's what the establishment says, but here's what we can do about it!"  It's exciting to see an attorney who is so passionate about what he believes in.  An attorney that doesn't back down and challenges the status quo.  I hope I never become an attorney who is content with "the way things are."  I want to be able to push the envelope......

Allie is a third year law student. She graduated from a small liberal arts college in 2008, married that same summer, and started law school in the fall. Talk about transitions! When she’s not studying, she loves to be with her hubby, Dustin. She also enjoys spending time with her family and friends, reading, cooking, crocheting, gardening, and decorating her home. Her favorite shows are Friends, Fringe, 30 Rock, Modern Family, Project Runway, and Top Chef. She has no idea what area of law she wants to practice in but is most drawn to areas involving torts- she is fluent in Spanish and hopes to incorporate that into her legal career.
