In the Midst of Finals…

posted by Grant

My finals schedule is terrible this semester.  I had a final on the first day of finals "week" and I have a final on the last day of finals "week."  That means my finals "week" is really almost three weeks.  This is an AWFUL way to end the semester, but I know it will just make summer taste that much sweeter once it arrives.

So in the midst of my studying, I had a conversation with a recruiter at a decent-sized law firm in my hometown.  He was telling me about how in years past they always tell kids who want to end up working in a bigger firm not to settle for just any old law job, but to really seek out something that would supply them with the skills that would be applicable to the large law firm experience.  However, he said that this year his advice is for law students just to get a job.  I asked him to clarify whether he meant to get a job doing something law-related.  He responded by suggesting that a law-related job would be ideal, but he doesn't expect most students to be able to find that.

So, his response got me thinking.  I assume most law students turned down other opportunities to go to law school.  We all probably had pretty good grades, and probably could have found jobs we would have enjoyed upon graduation.  There are also probably a lot of law students out there who left jobs they enjoyed to go to law school.  When I think back to some of the jobs I interviewed for during my senior year in college, I feel a tinge of regret about going to law school, at least in the short run, because a big reason I chose this path was job security.

Growing up, people would always say you should love your job.  I don't know if that is naive or what, but I don't anticipate loving my first job out of law school.   I am confident in the long run, I will end up doing work that I enjoy, but it is somewhat disheartening (in the midst of cramming for five closed-book final exams) to think that I could be two years into a career doing something I enjoy, but instead I am facing loads of uncertainty.
