Dress For Success: The Summer Intern Wardrobe

posted by Christy

The end is in sight.  Finals will finish for most students next week and summer will finally begin!  Fortunately my last exam is today, but I can't relax for very long because I start my summer internship on Monday.  That means this weekend I will be trying to fill in the holes in my wardrobe and get prepared to start work.  Here are a few gender neutral tips for your summer intern wardrobe:

  1. Try and find out how most people dress in your office.  When you had your interview, were most people wearing suits or was it more business casual?  If you are working at a larger firm or anticipate going to court the majority of the time, you will probably have to wear a suit or at least keep one at the office.  I would advise wearing a suit the first day no matter where your working, so don't worry if you don't know the dress code, you can always go shopping during your first week of work.
  2. Dress for the job you want, not the one your have.  For a legal internship you want to try and dress like an attorney, not like a paralegal or the support staff, if there is a difference.
  3. Wear appropriate shoes.  You might have to walk a long distance so make sure you are comfortable while still looking professional.
