Interview Etiquette

Having a great interview is certainly a key to obtaining that coveted job, internship, or researching position. Mock interviews, preparation, and superb answers all help to a fine performance. But what else can be done? There are little things that make a huge difference so don’t forget about them. The following are some pointers that may seem obvious, but you would be surprised as to how many times people violate them:

  • Be alert and interested from beginning to end.
  • Be calm and confident but never egotistical or aggressive.
  • Use a firm handshake and a sincere smile.
  • Convey interest in the company and the interviewers; never act disinterested.
  • Be positive and confident - never get defensive at any question or comment at job interviews.
  • Maintain eye contact with the interviewer without crossing the boundary into staring.
  • Don't ask for refreshments or food (unless you absolutely need to).
  • Speak of your accomplishments with specific examples.
  • Don't put down any former employer or colleagues.
  • When asking them questions, don’t ask about money or vacation.
  • Don't excuse yourself to go to the bathroom during the interview (unless you absolutely need to).
  • Dress to impress! But don’t be too flashy.
  • Be thankful! And send a thank you note soon after the interview.
